Food Production Systems for Backyards and Small Farms. A Review Part 3

Tonight I reach the part of my review of Backyard Food Production’s DVD that deals with what I think is one of the most over looked points of self sufficiency plans…protein. Small scale livestock is what makes this into a system and I was impressed with how well they integrated rabbits and chickens into their plans.

The DVD makes a good case for rabbits being one of the main sources of protein available on a homestead. I liked how the rabbit hutches were positioned above small compost piles. The rabbits were able to do their “business” right into the pile, saving a bit of labor. I think that anything that can save a busy homesteader a bit of shoveling has merit.

One part of the DVD that isn’t for the squeamish is the slaughter and butchering of a rabbit. I found this part to be very informative. I felt after watching it that I could process a rabbit for dinner. I want to stress that the killing of the rabbit was very humane and done in a respectful manner. I come from a family of hunters and have processed whitetails but those of us who aren’t ready to take the next step might want to skip this section.

I enjoyed the section on chickens. It gave a pretty good over view on how to keep chickens on a property. Their flock is partially free range and roosts up in trees, living out in the ‘burbs this is a little out of my league but it was entertaining and informative none the less.

Tomorrow night I’ll be finishing up my review of this DVD. I’m very happy with it and think it would make a great addition to any homesteading library. I wish you all good luck in the contest. Check last night’s blog for entry details.
