Guerrilla Gardening on Long Island

September 28, 2011 By Mike

In my travels during the days following Hurricane Irene I came across some great Guerrilla Gardens right here on Long Island. I found them to be really inspiring, if people can find the will and time to garden in out of the way places I surely can find the time to grow my backyard garden.

This garden I found behind an old factory. It was pretty extensive and had corn, peppers, and some tomatoes. I would have gotten some better photos but the garden was in a pretty bad area and the wandering pit bulls kind of had me on edge.

Down the block from the factory garden I found an empty lot planted with zucchini and some more corn.

The last garden I came across was a bit more elaborate then the first two. It had nice raised beds and a great variety of veggies. It seemed more like a whole community Guerrilla Garden! This garden was located in a strip of land between two roads and under the high tension power lines.

I’m going to have to find a good spot for a little guerrilla gardening of my own. I’ve got my eye on patch of fence along the State Route I walk the baby on. Some pole beans might grow nicely! Anybody else discover some or participate in Guerrilla Gardening?

I am blessed to live in a good country neighborhood with plenty of room to grow things. I do think, however, that being eaten alive by hundreds of mosquitoes every evening while I tend it qualifies me as a guerrilla gardener.

Lol! I’m jealous you’ve got plenty of land. Here on LI sometimes you’ve got to get a bit creative.

It is great to see people doing what they can. Thank you for the reminder that we should all be inspired to grow some of our own food if at all possible.

Sorry you didn”t get to take photos of the herbs I had growing in the two large pots on either side of my front door. As you know, I usually plant them with flowers (annuals at that) but you inspired me to do something different this year. If you came by to see your mother once in awhile you might not have missed that photo op.
