Beer Can Chicken

Beer Can Chicken

In keeping with my theme of Homestyle Cooking and with the Summer grilling season upon us I figured it was time to cover making a Beer Can Chicken. The one shown above was done by a friend of mine, they all don’t have to have bacon but it sure doesn’t hurt.

Ingredients

  • 5-6 lb fryer chicken
  • 2 tbsp of olive oil
  • 1 can of beer
  • Your favorite spice rub

The Recipe

I get the party started by lighting the grill. I use a gas grill so I light the front and rear burners so I can get an indirect heat on my bird. I keep them at a Medium flame.

While that is getting hot, I give my 5-6 lb fryer a quick scrub with water in the sink and then a towel dry. The bird then gets a rub down with 2 tbsp of olive oil. I use McCormicks’s Beer Can Chicken Rub. I don’t hold back and give the bird a generous coating of spice.

Next open a can of beer and chug half of it, then insert the can into the cavity of the bird. I’ve got a fancy holder that keeps the bird upright, this is nice to have but not necessary.

Place the bird in the center of the grill and cook for an 1 1/2 to 2 hours, until a thermometer inserted into the thigh reads 180. I’ve got one of those fancy remote units that sits on my belt and beeps when the bird is at temperature.
