Saving Bacon Fat

You should be saving your bacon fat. It is an easy way to add a smokey and meaty flavor to just about anything.

I use a paper coffee filter and mason jar. I pinch the filter to the jar with a ring and let the warm, not hot, fat filter into the jar. This yields a nice clear liquid the cools into a pleasant white solid. If you end up with more than you need in your fridge I recommend storing some in the freezer. I have a hard time getting rid of any of it!

Bon Appetit has 15 uses for Bacon Fat that must be seen to be believed! I’ve had the Bacon Fat Popcorn and it is awesome! I can’t wait for camping and backyard fire season to make some!

What are you doing with your saved Bacon Fat?

I like the popcorn in bacon fat too, as well as spiced oven potatoes. A couple of spoonfuls of bacon grease, some onion powder, garlic powder, lemon pepper and seasoning salt, covered with tinfoil. I also like fish cooked in bacon grease, so fish eggs and bacon are a favourite family breakfast. I’ve never had more than enough bacon grease in the fridge though. We go through it too quickly, lol.

I’ll have to give it a try with fish, it sounds pretty good!

Is it necessary to refrigerate bacon fat? I’ve heard people claim that either way is necessary.

Kristian, I err on the side of caution and keep mine in the fridge.

I have a metal container made especially for saving bacon grease. I do not keep it in the fridge, but on my stove top, and have no problems. LOVE using it for grilled cheese sandwiches instead of butter! YUM!!
