Wustoff Classic Chef’s Knife Review

With all the homestyle cooking  and gear reviews we do around here it is a real shame that we went so long before getting ourselves a REAL knife, like the Wustoff Classic Chef’s Knife. It is an amazing piece of equipment to have. My wife does most of the kitchen prep around here (she is never happy with my “rustic chopping technique) and it has noticeably elevated her cutting ability.  I use sharp pocket knives made with the latest “wonder” steels and hi tech blade designs and none of them scare me like this thing does! After using it I can really appreciate how those tv chefs can get such bloody wounds.Right now our plan is to start acquiring one good cooking knife a year. I won’t go back to using the old ones now that I’m spoiled.  I think that a good chef’s knife has to be experienced to appreciate it.

Those are great knives Mike. I was lucky enough to find the 8″ chefs knife and 8″ carving knife like new at a thrift store for….$0.25/each! No kidding. I’ve also rescued a number of excellent knives. Those that were somewhat abused, but after a little TLC came back to cut again. Keep your eyes open. This disposable society throws out good stuff sometimes.

Great scores! I’ll have to keep an eye out.

That’s funny. I also have the Wustoff. My wife has been acquiring them gradually and we are up to 4 now over the past 3 years. They really are so much better than the stamped steel cheap ones. It’s also much easier to cut straight I have noticed. It won’t be long before she is ready to ditch all those old ones.

Patrick: I keep an eye out in the thrift store bins but have never found a deal like that. Good catch.

That is our plan too, but now I’ve got to cruise the thrift store too!

There are also places that sell what are termed “seconds” of these knives. They’re seconds only in terms of some small imperceptible marking in my experience. It’s a good idea to google and save some bucks if you don’t find them at the thrift store.
