Cook A Steak In Cast Iron

Since I ran out of propane for the grill (I know, I know, way to be prepared!) but still wanted to do some homestyle cooking, I got to try out a technique I’ve had my eye on for a while now, and along the way learned how to cook a steak in a cast iron frying pan.

Crank It Up!

I cranked the oven up to 450 degrees and put my biggest cast iron frying pan on a high heat. While that was going I seasoned the steak with just a bit of Kosher salt and fresh ground pepper. I added a bit of olive oil into the pan and watched it start to smoke just a bit. I added the steak and it started to sizzle! I seared it for 45 seconds and then flipped it. I gave the other side a 45 second sear as well and then the pan and steak go right into the hot oven.

I cooked it for 3 minutes and then flipped it. It cooked for 3 more minutes and then out on to the stove. I let it sit in the frying pan and rest while I assembled the rest of the meal.

I love cooking in cast iron. Some of it is the delight of using pans handed down from my grandmother. You just don’t get that from Teflon pans.

Hey Mike, Great recipe and it looks great. I have a similar method (Recipe Cast Iron Steak) that I use on cast iron as well. One trick is to toss some minced garlic & herbs onto the steak once it’s finished cooking, then wrap it in foil. I do like to pull the steak off the skillet since it’s so darn hot and will continue cooking. Great site and thanks for sharing!

      Billy,
Thanks for stopping by! I checked out your recipe and I’ll have to give it a try.
