Gerber Shard

Gerber Shard

The Gerber Shard is a neat piece of gear. I got one for Christmas and it has become a favorite piece of Every Day Carry Gear. Taking up no more space than a regular key chain the Gerber Shard is a 7 tool dynamo. It has 2 sizes of flathead screwdrivers, a Philips head screwdriver, a prybar, a bottle opener, a wire stripper, and a lanyard hole.

Pro’s

The Shard keeps me from using one of my fancy pocket knives as a prybar and for this alone it will always have a home on my key ring. The Bottle  Opener works well on Friday when opening an after work beer. The screwdrivers work well enough. They are a little on the thick side but can get the job done. The Philips end is pretty pointy! If i were still working as a bouncer I would carry it just to jam into unruly drunks to keep them moving, it would give a heck of a sternum rub!

Con’s

The grind marks on my Shard are a bit rough. The Philips end is so wildly out of whack that it doesn’t really work all that well on smaller screws. The wire stripper is pretty bad as well. I don’t think MacGyver could get it to work. The lanyard hole is something I have a hard time calling a tool.

Wrap-Up

With that being said I do enjoy my Gerber Shard. It has it’s shortcomings but for $7 I got a neat gadget for my key ring. I’ve gotten my money’s worth from the prybar and from poking my pals with the pointy end.

Looks like a neat little tool. Just right for stocking stuffers! A handy little prybar is always better than a thumbnail!

Why do you need to be poking your friends with a little metal implement? 🙂

I need a new bottle opener on my keychain so this is a top contender.
