This week is the deadline to grieve property taxes in my county. This is actually a straight forward process made a lot easier by using the internet. The Zillow website lets you look up the the most recent sale price of houses in your area. You need to find 3 houses of comparable size in near your home and what they sold for. You can then present the prices to the Town and plead your case that you are being un-fairly assessed. With the way the housing market has taken a dump, it isn’t to hard to find houses the same size that have dropped in price. With the high property taxes in my county the savings can be pretty substantial.
While I like the opportunity to lessen my tax burden, the whole process does piss me off a little bit. Instead of the Town knowing damn well that my house has gone down in value, and doing the right with my taxes, they make us do this stupid ritual year in and year out. I guess it really is a case of government begetting government.
Out of curiosity, how does it work where my readers live?
