Last night I started my review of Backyard Food Production’s DVD Food Production Systems for Backyards and Small Farms. Tonight I want to get a little more in-depth with some of the concepts that are put forth in this DVD.
One of the most amazing sections of the DVD is about water. I was blown away by the rainwater collection system that has been built on the property featured. The DVD shows the thought that went into being able to collect and store 40,000+ gallons of rainwater! That isn’t a typo. It made my dreams of a rain barrel or two pale in comparison but it also inspired me and gave me some great ideas to incorporate into my own plans. The property also makes good use of ponds to keep water available for food production. This is the section that I felt could use the most fleshing out and is worthy of it’s own DVD.
The DVD also introduced me to the concept of Bio-Intensive Gardening. I’m definetly going to give this method a try on a smaller scale in my own new raised beds this year. I was interested in how they presented their ideas on fertility in the garden which includes a large amount of composting and green manure/ cover crops.
Now for the part that you’ve all been waiting for…the giveaway! This one is going to be little different, to enter send me an e-mail with “Giveaway”in the subject line and just a line or two why you would like it. My e-mail is mike at thebackyardpioneer.com. All entries must be in my Noon on Friday 1/6/12. I’ll randomly pick a winner and post the winner in Friday’s blog.
Tomorrow night I’ll discuss a few more of the sections of the DVD.
