In my travels during the days following Hurricane Irene I came across some great Guerrilla Gardens right here on Long Island. I found them to be really inspiring, if people can find the will and time to garden in out of the way places I surely can find the time to grow my backyard garden.
This garden I found behind an old factory. It was pretty extensive and had corn, peppers, and some tomatoes. I would have gotten some better photos but the garden was in a pretty bad area and the wandering pit bulls kind of had me on edge.
Down the block from the factory garden I found an empty lot planted with zucchini and some more corn.
The last garden I came across was a bit more elaborate then the first two. It had nice raised beds and a great variety of veggies. It seemed more like a whole community Guerrilla Garden! This garden was located in a strip of land between two roads and under the high tension power lines.
I’m going to have to find a good spot for a little guerrilla gardening of my own. I’ve got my eye on patch of fence along the State Route I walk the baby on. Some pole beans might grow nicely! Anybody else discover some or participate in Guerrilla Gardening?
