I’m working on Fire Island this Summer, and have been lucky enough to come across more than a few very nice vegetable gardens, tucked away in hidden nooks. Today I threw caution to the wind and knocked on the door of a house with a fantastic veggie/flower garden. I explained that I’ve got a blog about gardening and preserving the harvest and the homeowner was kind enough to talk to me about her garden for a few minutes (I do find that most people are pretty excited to run into a fellow gardener). She was especially proud of her beets and the fact that her garden grows on top of the homes septic system. I admire the gardeners that I run into down on Fire Island as growing anything besides bamboo and blueberries must be a pain in the neck! Most of the gardens I’ve seen over there are giant raised beds as the sandy soil doesn’t lend itself to growing veggies. To make matters worse, the deer population runs completely unchecked and it isn’t unheard of to lose a lunch to a marauding whitetail!
I did manage to get a few pics with my phone, enjoy!
